Over the last 30 years, governments around the world have come to recognise the importance of strengthening enforcement and harmonising their approaches to ensure that money launderers do not take advantage of weaknesses in the anti-money laundering (AML) controls. Governments have criminalised money laundering and imposed regulatory requirements on financial institutions and other businesses to prevent and detect money laundering. The requirements are continually being refined and interpreted by government authorities. Because of the often international nature of the money laundering process, there are many cross-border issues.
